*Full Contest Result Announcement*

Student writing contest 2009 organized by NASeA (Nepalese Association in Southeast America) has just concluded. I was very pleased and happy to see the interest shown by our students and effort they have put on. The interest and effort shown by our students further illustrates the amount of time they have devoted to expanding their knowledge about Nepal. We, the committee members, found it extremely rewarding and eye-opening to read the wonderful essays and memoirs submitted.  It was challenging tasks to select the top three essays and memoirs. All who entered did an excellent job, and we would like to thank all the participants.

High School students were requested to write an essay focused on the topic of *“Introducing Nepal to a friend.”* A four-member committee was formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Sushama Pradhan. The other committee members were Dr. Harihar Bhattarai, Mrs. Nisha Dhaubadel and Mrs. Ambika Tiwari. The winners in respective order are Miss Sadichchha Shrestha (Canada), Miss Sadichchha Basnet (USA) and Miss Sadiksha Prasain (USA). The first, second and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes of $300.00, $100.00 and $50.00 respectively along with an award certificate.

This was the first time NASeA and ANMA included a contest for middle school students. The middle school students were asked to write a memoir about *“Seeing Nepal in an abroad: I can't forget”*. Under the chairmanship of Dr. Sushama Pradhan, a memoir contest committee was formed. The committee members were Dr. Harihar Bhattarai, Mrs. Srijana Khatiwada Sharma, and Mr. Jhalendra Shrestha. The first prize winner is Mr. Amod Karki (USA). The second and the third prize winners are Mr. Moon Dev Ghimire (Canada) and Miss Pratiksha Gurung (Canada) respectively. The first, second and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 correspondingly along with an award certificate.

The award ceremony and felicitation of winners will take place during Labor day joint convention (September 5- 7) of NASeA and ANMA (Association of Nepalese in Midwest America) hosted by NCNC (Nepal Center of North Carolina), SCAN (South Carolina Association of Nepalese) and GNC (Greater Charlotte Nepalese Association) in Raleigh, North Carolina. Winning essays will also be published in Yeti Viewpoints, a publication of NASeA .

This is of vital importance for the survival and development of our community that our young generations keep on rekindling interest, love and bond to Nepal and Nepali culture; and be proud of their roots and heritage. I hope that learning about our extremely rich cultural and natural heritage, that only few countries in the world can parallel, will make our young generations very proud of their Nepali heritage and always be eager to say loudly “I am of Nepali origin” and be ambassador of Nepali causes.

This project could not have been possible without the incessant work of committee members, all of whom I am extremely grateful to. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Tek Thapa, president of NASeA, for continuous support and dedication; and NASeA for introducing and maintaining this contest. I would also like to thank Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota for not only being a patron to the middle school contest, but also for his commitment to continue this project for years to come.
